Silver thimbles were not widely produced until the mid 19th Century. During the Victorian period thimble collecting became very popular and silver thimbles were sought after. The metal was soft and could be crafted with all manner of patterns. However it was found that silver is too soft a metal for practical use as it could be easily punctured by most needles. Charles Horner solved this problem by producing a thimble that consisted of a steel core covered inside and out by silver
